Scope

What we publish

IJNR publishes rigorously conducted research reporting negative, null, non-confirmatory or inconclusive findings across scientific disciplines, including unsuccessful replications, evidence-supported methodological limitations, and systematic reviews or meta-analyses of such findings. Eligible manuscripts are assessed on methodological quality, ethical standards and transparent reporting. Positive confirmatory findings fall outside the journal's remit. The full remit is on Aims and Scope.

  • Null results
  • Failed replications
  • Non-confirmatory findings
  • Negative data
  • Publication bias

Outside the remit: positive confirmatory results, purely theoretical speculation without empirical testing, unsupported opinion without data, and studies lacking methodological rigor and transparency.

Disciplines

Example research domains

The journal is multidisciplinary. The four domains below are examples, not an exhaustive list, and submissions from other scientific disciplines are equally welcome; About describes each one and how the journal assesses submissions.

D1

Biomedical & Life Sciences

  • Failed clinical trials and interventions
  • Non-significant drug efficacy studies
  • Negative genetic association and biomarker validation studies

D2

Physical & Chemical Sciences

  • Failed synthesis and catalysis attempts
  • Unsuccessful materials development
  • Physics experiments that did not confirm established theories

D3

Computational & Data Sciences

  • Models that failed to beat baselines
  • Non-reproducible computational models
  • Negative machine-learning results

D4

Environmental & Earth Sciences

  • Non-reproducible field studies
  • Failed environmental interventions
  • Climate-model predictions that did not hold

Process

How a manuscript is assessed

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

  1. Submission

The manuscript is submitted through ManuscriptZone; the simple submission form is an alternative.

  2. Editorial check

The editors confirm scope, completeness and methodological reporting.

  3. Peer review

Independent reviewers assess the study design, analysis and conclusions.

  4. Decision

The editor reaches a decision on the journal’s stated criteria, informed by the reviews.

    Based on independent review
  5. Publication

The article is published open access.
