Oxidative Telomere Attrition, Nutritional Antioxidants and Biological Aging
Abstract:
Telomeres are strings of DNA that are not themselves genes but that extend every chromosome beyond its last gene. Terminal telomeres are sacrificed during every mitotic event in human cells (“telomere attrition”), preserving the functional genome despite the “end replication problem.” However, the “telomeric theory of biological aging” suggests that when an individual cell has reproduced itself a sufficient number of times (the “Hayflick limit”), some the its telomeres have become critically shortened (“telomeric crisis”) and cannot completely “cap off” a chromosome, and any further attempts to replicate such a chromosome would produce damaged DNA and a dysfunctional cell (“cellular aging”). As cells enter telomeric crisis, they usually initiate intracellular signaling cascades that arrest DNA replication and mitotic activity, converting biologically active cells into inactive cells (“cellular senescence”). The progressive accum...
Serrated Lesions of Colorectum: A New Pathway in Colorectal Carcinogenesis
Abstract:
Colorectal polyps were traditionally classified as hyperplastic or adenomatous polyps. Adenomatous polyps were thought to be the precursor lesions of most of the colorectal cancers, but later serrated lesions were recognized as precursors of nearly one-third of colorectal cancers. Serrated lesions are a distinct group of polyps with special morphologic and histologic properties and a different carcinogenesis pathway to colorectal cancers. They are pale, flat or depressed lesions which may result in failure of detection on colonoscopy. So the endoscopist should be aware of these lesions and should follow the patients according to the surveillance guidelines.
Current Status of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in Colorectal Cancer Prevention
Abstract:
This review synthesizes evidence on NSAIDs and colorectal cancer prevention. It balances chemopreventive efficacy against gastrointestinal and cardiovascular risks, and considers selective COX‑2 inhibitors, dosing, and candidate populations for risk‑benefit.
Mechanisms Associated with Acquisition of Resistance to Butyrate-Induced Apoptosis in Colorectal Cancer Cells Using Gene Expression Analysis
Abstract:
Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide and its prevalence can be reduced by changes to lifestyle and diet. Fermentation of dietary fibre by the gut microbiota and formation of short chain fatty acids, in particular butyrate, is widely thought to play a role in preventing development of the disease. Despite butyrate’s known pro-apoptotic effects, a subpopulation of cancer cells is able to overcome these anti-neoplastic effects of colonic luminal butyrate to proliferate and establish tumours in vivo. In this study, a time course analysis of HT29 and HT29-BR cells treated with butyrate was conducted and global gene expression analysis was used to identify novel mechanisms associated with butyrate-induced apoptosis and in the acquisition of butyrate resistance. Bioinformatic analysis of the data identified deregulated O-GlcNAcylation activity and disruption to gene transcription by BRD4 as possible factors involved with butyrate-in...
Influence of Education Sources on Osteoporosis Knowledge and Calcium Intake in Adult Women: A cross sectional Study
Abstract:
Osteoporosis prevention among women requires obtaining proper knowledge early in life about the disease, risk factors and treatments. This study compares specific education sources to osteoporosis knowledge and calcium intake. Online survey using
High Prevalence of Obesity in a Saudi Community K.Aljabri, MD, FRCPC, S. Bokhari, MD. A Cross Section, Single Centre Study
Abstract:
Obesity is a major public health problem worldwide. We designed this study to determine the prevalence of obesity among Saudis in the department of primary care at King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital. Cross section study of Saudis of both sexes, aged more than or equal to 12 years at the department of primary care at King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital between January 2008 and June 2009. A total of 5968 were attending the department of primary care were included in this study. There were 2269 (38.0%) male and 3699 (62.0%) female. With age, a gradual increase was seen in the Body mass index (BMI) in both males and females, up to the age of 59 years, with a decrease occurring thereafter. In the females belo...
Double-Blind Randomized Trial on the Efficacy in a Short-Time Follow-Up of the “Quick Liberatory Rotation” Maneuver in Treating Posterior Canal BPPV
Abstract:
This double-blind randomized studyevaluates the efficiency of the Quick Liberatory Rotation maneuver (QLR) in solving signs and symptoms of Posterior Canal BPPV in a short time follow-up comparing the efficiency of QLR vs. a sham maneuver (“Fake QLR”).The study was performed at an input-output tertiary center for balance disorders. From January to September 2012, 200 patients with signs and symptoms of Posterior Canal BPPV respected the inclusion criteria in the study. The diagnosis was based on observation with binocular infrared videonystagmoscopy of the paroxysmal torsional and upbeat nystagmus evoked through the Dix-Hallpike test (DHT). Patients were divided in two groups, 100 in the group treated by QLR (Group 1) and 100 in the control group treated by “Fake QLR” (Group 2). Before the treatment, they self-evaluated a Visual Analogue Score on their vertiginous complaints (V-VAS). Patients were controlled one hour after the treatment by a blinded examine...
Predictors of Averse Events After Total Laryngectomy: An Analysis of the 2005-2011 NSQIP Datasets
Abstract:
We reviewed the 2005-2011 ACS-NSQIP database to evaluate factors associated with adverse events (AE) after total laryngectomy (TL). All total laryngectomies performed from 2006 to 2011 were identified for analysis. The cohort was characterized with respect to preoperative and demographic characteristics, complications, reoperation, and mortality. 493 cases were identified. Complications of any category occurred in 189 cases (38.3%). Factors that were found to confer significant risk for medical complications were increased age (dds Ratio (OR) 1.03), prior PCI (OR 2.84), disseminated cancer (OR 2.47), chronic steroid/immunosuppresion use (OR 2.87), unintended weight loss > 10% over 6 month...
Pleomorphic Adenoma of The Nasal Septum
Abstract:
Pleomorphic adenomas are uncommon tumors of the nasal cavity. They arise from minor salivary glands, and usually originate from the nasal septum. The tumors are more common in middle-aged females. We present a series of 8 cases of intranasal pleomorphic adenomas. Seven of these tumors originated from the nasal septum, and only one of them originated from the lateral nasal wall. Histopathologic examination of the tumors showed that these tumors have higher epithelial and lower stromal components compared to pleomorphic adenomas of major salivary glands. Endoscopic resection was performed in all cases and the patients were followed up for one year. No recurrences or complications were observed in this series. Endoscopic resection is recommended as the treatment of choice because of its proven efficacy and low morbidity.
Preparation Physico-Chemical Characterization and Catalytic applications of Polymer Anchored Dimethylglyoxime Copper (II) Metal Complex
Abstract:
Oxidation of 1-Proponol, 1-butanol 1-Hexanol and benzyl alcohol using chloromethylated polystyrene (6% Cross link) DMG (Dimethylglyoxime) copper complex or Poly(S-DVB)-DMG-M Where M= Cu) as catalyst and tert.butylhydroperoxide(TBHP) as oxidant, was studied. The polymer supported Cu Complex was characterized by some physicochemical and spectroscopic methods like elemental analysis IR Scanning electron micrographs (SEM). In the oxidation of 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 1-hexanol and benzyl alcohol. It was found that Product yield of these alcohols corresponding the order 1-Butanal >1-hexanone >Benzyldehyde > 1-Propanone. Kinetic data indicates that catalyst could be recycled without significant degradation of polymer
