Overview

Animal reproduction is the biological process by which animals produce offspring, encompassing the physiological, endocrine, and genetic mechanisms that govern gamete production, mating, fertilisation, gestation, and the postpartum return to fertility. In veterinary science and animal husbandry it is also an applied discipline, concerned with optimising fertility and reproductive efficiency in domestic species through reproductive management, assisted techniques, and the diagnosis and treatment of reproductive disorders. Hormonal regulation of the oestrous cycle, the quality and maturation of oocytes and sperm, and the health of the reproductive tract are central determinants of success. The research collected here reflects this applied and mechanistic focus, particularly in livestock. Studies address strategies to improve cattle fertility through reproductive management, including oestrous synchronisation, and the physiological processes of the postpartum period, such as uterine involution and the resumption of ovarian activity in dairy cows. Assisted-reproduction techniques feature in work on in vitro maturation of immature bovine oocytes and the factors that influence it, while other contributions examine reproductive performance, sex ratio, and the oxidative and nutritional status that affect fertility in cattle and small mammals. The influence of environmental and chemical exposures on reproductive function, including effects on steroidogenesis and the testes, is also represented. Together these works frame animal reproduction as a field combining reproductive physiology with practical management to sustain fertility and animal health.
