Overview
Animal production and management is the applied agricultural and veterinary discipline concerned with the efficient, sustainable, and welfare-conscious rearing of livestock and other production animals for food, fiber, and related outputs. It integrates animal nutrition, breeding and reproductive management, housing and husbandry, herd health, and disease prevention to optimize growth, fertility, product quality, and economic return while safeguarding animal welfare and public health. Reproductive performance is a central determinant of productivity, and management tools such as estrous synchronization, control of the postpartum period, and monitoring of uterine involution and ovarian activity are used to improve fertility and reproductive efficiency in cattle and other species. Health management addresses endemic and zoonotic threats, including parasitic infections, brucellosis, tuberculosis, and hydatidosis, as well as food-safety hazards such as aflatoxin contamination of milk, all of which directly affect herd productivity and the safety of animal-derived foods. The peer-reviewed research in this area reflects these themes, examining reproductive management and synchronization in dairy cattle, reproductive performance and sex ratio in cross-bred herds, parasitic and mycobacterial disease in production animals, and the public-health implications of contaminants in dairy products. The field thus links husbandry practice, veterinary medicine, reproductive biology, and food-system management.
