Total Abdominal Hysterectomy

A total abdominal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure where the uterus and cervix are removed. This is a major operation, typically performed to treat conditions such as heavy or excessive bleeding, fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and cancer. With a total abdominal hysterectomy, the patient's recovery time is usually shorter than with other types of hysterectomies, such as a laparoscopic or vaginal hysterectomy. Potential benefits include a decrease in menstrual pain and bleeding, as well as a lower risk of developing certain cancers. Complications can include infection and blood loss, so it is important to speak with your doctor to determine if this procedure is right for you.
