Article Processing Charges
What publication costs, when the charge applies, how it is invoiced, and why it has no bearing on whether a manuscript is accepted.

01 · What it covers
What the charge pays for
The journal is open access: every article is free to read and to reuse with attribution from the day it appears, so publication is funded by a charge to the authors or their institution rather than by subscriptions.
The charge covers management of peer review, editorial handling, copyediting and proofing, typesetting, Crossref DOI registration and metadata deposit, permanent hosting and long-term preservation of the published article.

The charge by article type
One charge applies per accepted manuscript, set by its article type.

03 · When it applies
When the charge applies
Submitting a manuscript is free of charge. The charge arises only once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, and an author who is not offered acceptance is never invoiced.
- Submission. Free of charge, for every article type and every route.
- Peer review. Free of charge, and carried out before any invoice exists. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
- Acceptance. The editorial decision is issued. Only at this point does a charge apply, at the rate set by the article type above.
- Production and publication. Copyediting, proofs and DOI registration follow, and the article is published under CC BY 4.0.
04 · Paying
How the charge is invoiced and paid
- Invoice
- The editorial office issues the invoice after editorial acceptance and sends it to the corresponding author or to the institutional billing contact supplied with the manuscript.
- Institutional and funder payment
- An institution, department or funder may pay on the authors' behalf. Supplying the billing contact, grant identifier and any purchase-order reference with the manuscript lets the editorial office issue the invoice correctly the first time.
- Funder requirements
- Authors publishing under a funder mandate should share those requirements early so that invoicing, licensing and repository deposit can be arranged together.
- Production
- Production begins once payment is confirmed.
- Billing and fee-relief inquiries
- Questions about an invoice, about paying from an institutional account, or about fee relief go to the editorial office, which answers them directly.
05 · Independence
The charge and the decision are separate
Editorial decisions are independent of payment.
The editors and reviewers who assess a manuscript take no part in invoicing and are not told what an author has paid or will pay. The charge is set by the article type alone and is the same for every accepted manuscript of that type, so it carries no information that could favour one submission over another.
The order in which the two happen is what makes this concrete: a manuscript is reviewed and decided first, and an invoice exists only afterwards, and only where the decision was acceptance.

06 · Withdrawal
Withdrawing a manuscript
An author may withdraw a manuscript. The terms below are the publisher’s and apply to every journal it publishes.
Withdrawal policy
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.
Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
