The field after the emergency phase
Coronavirus science did not end when the emergency did
The emergency-response literature of 2020–2022 answered urgent descriptive questions. The questions that remain are mechanistic, longitudinal and comparative — and they belong to a virus family that is now a permanent part of the human and animal disease landscape.
An endemic virus family, not a single outbreak
Four human coronaviruses — 229E, NL63, OC43 and HKU1 — circulate seasonally and predate the pandemic. SARS-CoV-2 now circulates endemically and continues to diversify, while MERS-CoV remains an ongoing zoonotic hazard. Coronaviruses are a standing subject, not a closed episode.
From description to mechanism
The open problems are structural and immunological: how spike variation shifts receptor binding and neutralization escape, how prior exposure shapes later responses, how antiviral resistance emerges under selection, and how the virus persists in tissue. These require experimental work, not situation reports.
Preparedness is a standing requirement
Coronavirus diversity in animal reservoirs, the determinants of host range, and surveillance across the human–animal interface remain active research questions. Work that improves detection and prediction has value independent of any particular outbreak.

The journal considers basic, translational, clinical, epidemiological and public-health research on human and animal coronaviruses. The coronavirus focus must be substantive, and conclusions must remain within the limits of the evidence.

General infectious-disease, medical or public-health work with only incidental coronavirus relevance is normally out of scope. The journal does not consider unsupported treatment, vaccine, diagnostic, transmission or outbreak claims; routine records without sufficient analysis; or forecasts that omit assumptions, limitations and validation. The journal considers basic, translational, clinical, epidemiological and public-health research on human and animal coronaviruses. Submissions may examine mechanisms, measurement, clinical or population effects, interventions, or preparedness. Coronavirus must remain the central research subject, and the methods and evidence must support the claims made.

Fees and membership have no bearing on peer review or on the editorial decision.
Who holds copyright, and under what license is work published?
Authors retain copyright in their work. Articles are published open access under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, which permits reuse and redistribution in any medium provided the original work is properly cited.
Does the journal have an impact factor?
No. The journal is not covered by Web of Science and therefore has no Journal Impact Factor. No citation metric is published for the journal, and none should be quoted on its behalf.
