How a Manuscript Is Reviewed and Decided

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.

  • Review Model

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Authors who want double-blind review should say so on submission.

  • Reviewers

Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts, selected for their competence in the manuscript's own subject and method.

  • Decision Criteria

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. They are independent of any fee, membership, editorial role or optional service.

  • Anonymized Files for Double-Blind Review

For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.

What the Journal Requires of Authors

These requirements apply to the manuscript as submitted, not only to the version finally accepted.

  • Authorship

Every listed author must have contributed substantively to the work and must approve the submitted version. Contributors who do not meet authorship criteria are named in the acknowledgments with their permission. Changes to the author list after submission require the written agreement of all authors.

  • Research Ethics and Consent

Research involving human participants requires approval from a named research ethics committee or institutional review board, and informed consent from participants. The approving body and the approval reference are reported in the manuscript. Identifiable patient information, including images and case details, requires written consent to publish.

  • Clinical Trial Registration

Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.

  • Data Availability

Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. Where participant confidentiality prevents open deposit, the statement says so and describes the conditions under which the data can be obtained. Clinical data are never required to be released in a form that could identify a participant.

  • Competing Interests and Funding

All authors disclose financial and non-financial competing interests, including employment, consultancy, honoraria, patents and personal relationships bearing on the work. Funding sources are named, with the role of the funder in the study stated.

  • Originality and Prior Publication

Submissions must be original and not under consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts are screened with Crossref Similarity Check, powered by iThenticate; a similarity report is read by an editor in context rather than applied as an automatic threshold. Reuse of the authors' own earlier text must be disclosed and attributed, and permission is required for third-party material.

  • Use of AI Tools

Authors disclose any use of generative AI tools in preparing a manuscript, naming the tool and describing what it was used for. AI tools cannot be listed as authors, and the authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the work.

  • Reporting Standards

Reporting follows the guideline that matches the study design. Depression outcomes should be measured with validated instruments, and the manuscript should state the instrument, the timing, the handling of missing data and the statistical rationale. Consult the instructions for authors for preparation guidance.

What the Journal Requires of Editors and Reviewers

The same standards bind the people who assess the work.

  • Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions rest with the handling editor and are independent of the publisher's commercial interests, of any fee or membership, and of an author's institution, funder or nationality.

  • Recusal

Editors and guest editors declare competing interests and recuse themselves from manuscripts they have authored, co-authored, or have a personal or financial interest in. Those manuscripts are assigned to another editor and handled independently. Holding an editorial role confers no advantage in the review of that person's own work.

  • Confidentiality

A submitted manuscript is confidential. Editors and reviewers do not disclose its existence or content, and do not use unpublished material for their own purposes.

  • Double-Blind Handling

When double-blind review is requested, editors must ensure that author-identifying information is not shared with reviewers. For double-blind manuscripts, reviewers must not attempt to identify the authors.

  • Reviewer File Handling

After submitting the review, reviewers should securely delete downloaded manuscript files and must not retain or use unpublished material.

  • AI in Review

Reviewers must obtain journal permission before using AI to assist with a review. Any permitted use must be disclosed, and confidential manuscript content must not be uploaded where confidentiality cannot be assured.

The full expectations for each role are set out in the editors guidelines and the reviewer guidelines.

Keeping the Published Record Correct

Once an article is published it is part of the scholarly record, and the journal's obligation shifts from assessing it to keeping it accurate.

  • Corrections and Retractions

Authors and readers who identify an error should notify the editorial office promptly. The journal issues a correction where an error affects part of a work, and a retraction where findings are no longer reliable. Corrections and retraction notices are published, linked to the original article, and are themselves permanent: the original is never silently removed or rewritten.

  • Concerns About Published Work

Concerns about integrity, authorship, ethics approval or data in a published article are investigated by the editorial office with the authors and, where appropriate, their institution. The journal follows COPE-aligned practice in handling them.

  • Complaints and Appeals

An author who believes a decision rested on a misunderstanding may appeal in writing to the editorial office, setting out the specific points at issue. An appeal is considered by an editor not involved in the original decision. Complaints about editorial process or conduct are directed to the same address and are handled separately from the manuscript.

  • Withdrawal Before Publication

Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere. Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge. Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC. Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal. The same terms are on the article processing charges page.

  • Privacy and Confidentiality

Personal data supplied during submission are used to operate peer review and publication and are not disclosed for unrelated purposes. Participant data in manuscripts remain confidential to the editorial process. The publisher's privacy statement sets out how personal data are handled across the platform.

  • Rights and Preservation

Articles are published under CC BY 4.0 with copyright retained by the authors. Preservation and identifier arrangements are described on the indexing page.

Raising a Question Before You Submit

Authors who are unsure how a policy applies to their manuscript are welcome to ask the editorial office at [email protected] before submitting.

Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.

Portico

Digital preservation

This journal’s content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA (the organization behind JSTOR). As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish. Read our preservation policy.
