Neonatal Thrombocytopenia

Neonatal thrombocytopenia is a condition in which infants have low levels of platelets in the blood shortly after birth, and is usually very transient. It is usually benign, but can in some cases be a sign of a more serious underlying condition. It can potentially lead to severe bleeding and is usually treated with steroid therapy to encourage platelet production, or if needed a platelet transfusion. Early detection and proper management of neonatal thrombocytopenia is essential to reducing the risks and ensuring the infant's health.
