Biography
Dr. Julia Barbado is affiliated with Río Hortega University Hospital in Spain, where her research spans diverse areas of internal medicine with particular emphasis on systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and clinical nutrition. Her work has explored biomarkers and host immune responses in autoimmune and respiratory conditions, including cytokine profiling in lupus nephritis and viral versus nonviral exacerbations of COPD, as well as the clinical utility of nutritional screening tools such as the Mini Nutritional Assessment in hospitalized patients. Dr. Barbado's most-cited publication, "Lack of awareness of systemic lupus erythematosus and its consequences in a cohort of moderate and severe patients in Spain: The LupusVoice study" (2024), addresses patient awareness and disease burden in lupus populations. Her contributions extend to understanding complement system dysregulation, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in systemic sclerosis, and the persistent immune activation in lupus despite standard therapies.
