Reperfusion Injury

Reperfusion injury is a process of tissue injury and cell death resulting from the return of blood supply to tissue or an organ that has been deprived of oxygen and nutrients due to a period of ischemia. It occurs when the sudden reintroduction of oxygen causes an inflammatory response, damaging the tissue and leading to cell death. This can occur as a result of a number of medical procedures, such as cardiac bypass surgery, organ transplantation, and stroke. Reperfusion injury is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality and it can have a detrimental effect on organ function.
