Apoplastic Space

The apoplastic space is the region of the plant cell between the cell wall and the plasma membrane. It consists mainly of proteins and other cell components, including cellular organelles, and provides a conduit for the transport of molecules and water within the cell. It is an essential component of the cell's water-balance system, and it helps regulate the uptake of nutrients and other materials from the environment. The apoplastic space has numerous uses in biotechnology, including cell transfection, protein production, and biomineralization processes. It is also used in plant breeding for disease resistance and other crop improvement processes. As such, it is an important area of research for plant scientists and plant breeders alike.
