Acid-fast Stain

The acid-fast stain is a laboratory procedure used to identify bacteria belonging to the genus Mycobacterium. The procedure involves the use of special dyes and a heated acid solution to make the cell wall of the bacteria impermeable to the stain. This causes the bacteria to appear bright red when viewed through a microscope, allowing for easy visual identification, which is of clinical significance. It is commonly used in clinical settings to diagnose diseases such as tuberculosis, as well as for research purposes.
