Metabolism & Regulation

Metabolism is the process that cells use to convert ingested energy (in the form of food) into the energy that is required for the biochemical reactions necessary for life. It involves the breakdown of molecules, the construction of new molecules, and the transport of molecules and ions. Regulation is the process which allows organisms to maintain a very precise level of metabolic activity, allowing it to adjust to changing conditions in the environment. Metabolism and regulation are essential processes in any organism, as they allow the body to make use of the energy it needs to continue functioning. Regulation is especially important as it helps to ensure that metabolic processes are appropriate for the organism’s current needs, allowing it to respond to external changes. The ability to regulate metabolism is key for the survival of any organism.
