Sudden Death in Epilepsy

Sudden death in epilepsy is a rare but potentially fatal complication of epilepsy, a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Sudden death in epilepsy occurs when a seizure is so intense or prolonged that it causes irreversible brain damage or cardiac arrhythmias. It is estimated that up to 7% of people with epilepsy may die suddenly and unexpectedly. There is a need for better awareness, diagnosis and prevention of sudden death in epilepsy to improve the prognosis of individuals with the disorder. Early and accurate diagnosis of epileptic seizures, accurate genetic testing, and implementation of profilactic strategies, like early treatment with antiepileptic drugs, can reduce the risk of sudden death in epilepsy. Management of sudden death in epilepsy must also include counseling of family members and carers, as well as support for them.
