Epilepsy and Alcohol

Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain characterized by recurrent episodes of altered consciousness and/or violent physical convulsions. Alcohol can increase the likelihood of seizures in people with epilepsy and should be avoided. People with epilepsy should abstain from alcohol use or limit their intake, as it can reduce the effectiveness of antiepileptic medications, resulting in an increased risk of seizures. Additionally, alcohol can cause psychological changes, such as depression, in people with epilepsy. Therefore, avoiding alcohol may help to reduce the risk of seizures, as well as improve the overall quality of life in people with this condition.
