Rheumatic Fever

Rheumatic fever is a serious complication of untreated Streptococcal throat infections. It is caused by an autoimmune reaction, where antibodies produced by the body mistakenly attack healthy tissue, particularly the heart valves. Although it is more common in childhood, it can occur at any age. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. Left untreated, rheumatic fever can lead to long-term heart complications, including heart failure and stroke. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for preventing complications and reducing the risk of long-term disability or death.
