Primary Bone Tumors

Primary bone tumors are abnormal masses or lesions that develop inside of bones, either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). They can occur at any age and there are several different types depending on the type of cell affected. These tumors can cause pain, swelling, and can impact normal movement and function of the affected bone. Treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapy can reduce the size of the tumor and potentially provide a cure depending on the type and severity. Primary bone tumors that occur in adults are often due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Early identification and correct diagnosis are important for the successful treatment of primary bone tumors.
