Seed Coat

The seed coat is the outermost layer of the seed. It is comprised of the protective outer layer of the seed and often contains nutrient-rich materials. Its purpose is to protect the embryo and maintain integrity of the seed until the right conditions are present for germination. Seed coats also help to disperse a seed, as well as to deter animals from eating it. They can also contain compounds that help to suppress seed germination until conditions are suitable. Seed coats are therefore essential for the successful reproduction of plants.
