Root Structure

Root structure describes the shape, size, and arrangement of a plant's roots. This is important for water and nutrient uptake, support of the plant, and anchoring the plant in the soil. In addition, root structure can determine how susceptible the plant may be to drought, flooding, and wind damage. Root structure is also used to assess soil structure and fertility, as different roots are better adapted to different soil conditions. Root structure is a key factor in agricultural production, as the roots of a crop determine its ability to withstand environmental stresses, uptake nutrients, and resist pests and diseases.
