Root Nodules

Root nodules are small, swollen formations on plant roots that contain nitrogen-fixing bacteria. They are important for plant growth and assist in the legume-rhizobial symbiosis, a mutually beneficial relationship between legumes (such as soybeans and alfalfa) and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (known as rhizobia). Root nodules help plants access the nitrogen, an essential nutrient for all organisms, from the atmosphere. This serves as a more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly alternative to synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. Root nodules are also important for plant health, as the bacteria in them produce substances that ward off disease-causing organisms.
