Root Hairs

Root hairs are microscopic, single-celled extensions of the epidermal layer of a plant root. They greatly increase the surface area of the root allowing for an increase in water and nutrient absorption. Root hairs are essential for a plant’s survival, as they are responsible for the uptake of essential minerals and water required for growth. Additionally, root hairs may play a role in the uptake of certain pollutants and toxins from the soil, thus protect the plant from environmental hazards.
