Abaxial Surface

The abaxial surface is the undersurface of many plant organs. It is usually the side of the plant organ facing away from the stem or the main source of light. Its importance lies in the fact that it plays an important role in the process of photosynthesis by intercepting light and absorbing carbon dioxide. This enables plants to produce the energy-rich molecules needed for growth. Additionally, the abaxial surface also contains trichomes or small, hairlike structures that help protect the plant from dehydration and damage from environmental stressors. Thus, the abaxial surface is an essential surface for plants that helps to maximize their photosynthetic potential.
