Overview
Protozoan parasites are single-celled eukaryotic organisms that live in or on a host and cause disease, responsible for some of the most significant infections affecting humans and animals. They include the agents of malaria, leishmaniasis, and intestinal infections such as those caused by Giardia, Entamoeba, and Cryptosporidium, and they spread through routes that include contaminated water and food, insect vectors, and contact with infected hosts. The illnesses they cause range from self-limiting diarrhea to severe, life-threatening systemic disease, making their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention important goals of tropical-disease research. Work in the journal addresses the epidemiology, transmission, and control of protozoan infections: studies include the role of domestic pigeons as potential carriers in the transmission of human protozoan parasites, an epidemiological profile of intestinal protozoan infection from a hospital-based survey in Dakar, Senegal, a prevalence study of intestinal parasitic infections among patients, and research on the immunopathology of Plasmodium infection. Related work examines protozoan infection in animals, such as Eimeria in poultry. Together this research illustrates how protozoan parasites circulate and are studied across human and veterinary contexts. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to protozoan parasites and their diagnosis, transmission, and control.
