Overview

The immune system is the complex network of cells, tissues, organs, and molecules that defends the body against pathogens—bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi—as well as toxins and abnormal cells, while maintaining tolerance to self. It comprises innate immunity, which provides rapid, non-specific defense, and adaptive immunity, which generates specific, memory-bearing responses mediated by lymphocytes and antibodies. Immune function is central to protection against infection, to vaccine responses, to cancer surveillance, and, when dysregulated, to immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, and inflammation, and it changes with age through a process of immunosenescence. Research in this area examines frailty and the immune system, the role of immunoglobulins and immune responses in developing safe therapeutic agents, and the use of immune modulators such as interferon-gamma and convalescent plasma in COVID-19. Studies also address immunoassays and immunogenomic approaches for monitoring cancer and infectious disease, immune thrombocytopenia, dietary modulation of immune risk through plant lectins, the relationship between xenobiotic exposure, immunoglobulin responses, and aging, and the immunological dimensions of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods span clinical studies, laboratory immunology, cell-line and biomarker analysis, and reviews. By defending against and responding to disease, the immune system underlies infection, vaccination, and immunotherapy. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on immune function, immunity, and immunological disease.
