Overview

Brain infection is the invasion of the brain or its surrounding tissues by disease-causing agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, leading to inflammation that can damage neural tissue. Depending on the structures involved, brain infections take forms such as encephalitis, meningitis, or brain abscesses, and they can produce symptoms including fever, headache, confusion, seizures, neurological deficits, and, in severe cases, lasting disability or death. Pathogens may reach the brain through the bloodstream, from nearby infections, or following injury, and prompt diagnosis and treatment are critical. In tropical regions, certain infectious agents, including parasites and fungi, are important causes of central nervous system disease. Research published by the journal in Tropical Diseases and Medicine relevant to brain infection includes a case report and literature review of multiple cerebral, calcified, and infected hydatid cysts, describing a parasitic infection that can involve the brain, as well as work on emerging fungal infections such as the post-COVID surge of mucormycosis, which can spread to the central nervous system. Such studies reflect the spectrum of infectious causes of brain involvement encountered in tropical and global health settings. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to brain infection and infectious diseases affecting the central nervous system.
