Overview
Non-human primates are the members of the order Primates other than Homo sapiens, a diverse group of mammals that includes prosimians such as lemurs and lorises, monkeys of the New and Old World, and the apes, among them the great apes most closely related to humans. They share defining primate traits including grasping hands with opposable digits, forward-facing eyes conferring stereoscopic vision, enlarged and complex brains, and generally prolonged development and social organisation, while differing widely in body size, anatomy, ecology and behaviour and inhabiting chiefly tropical and subtropical regions. Their close evolutionary relationship to humans, reflected in comparative anatomy and shared chromosomal organisation, makes them central to research in evolutionary biology, primatology and comparative morphology, where studies of structures such as the mandibular neurovascular canals in great apes illuminate human evolution. Non-human primates are also important in biomedical and infectious-disease research, including as hosts or models relevant to zoonotic infections such as monkeypox transmissible between animals and people, an area addressed through One Health approaches. Their physiological and neurological similarity to humans supports investigation across many fields. At the same time, their conservation status, the ethics of their use in research, and the management of disease at the human-animal interface are significant concerns. The study of non-human primates thus integrates evolution, ecology, behaviour, comparative anatomy and biomedical science.
