Overview

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine concerned with the health, growth, and disease of infants, children, and adolescents, from birth through the transition to adulthood. It differs from adult medicine because the patient is developing: drug dosing, physiology, disease presentation, and management must be scaled to age and maturational stage, and care encompasses both acute illness and the trajectory of normal development. The discipline spans preventive measures such as immunization and growth monitoring, the diagnosis and treatment of infectious, congenital, neoplastic, and nutritional disorders, and subspecialties including neonatology, pediatric neurology, oncology, and infectious disease. Because children's outcomes are shaped by family, environment, and access to care, pediatrics also integrates public-health and psychosocial dimensions. The peer-reviewed research collected here in the journal's pediatric health and nutrition corpus reflects this breadth, including traumatic brain injury outcomes in pediatric patients, immunization clinic models, childhood infectious disease such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia and COVID-19, pediatric nasopharyngeal carcinoma, rare presentations of fever of unknown origin and vascular anomalies, micronutrient deficiency from inadequate intake, and dietary interventions in conditions such as autism spectrum disorder. Together these illustrate the field's combined emphasis on preventive care, accurate diagnosis, and the management of common and rare disease across the pediatric age range.
