Overview
Genetic analysis is the examination of genetic material to determine the structure, variation, function, and inheritance of genes and genomes. It ranges from the study of individual mutations and polymorphisms to genome-wide and population-level assessment, and it integrates molecular, cytogenetic, and computational methods to relate genotype to phenotype. Central to personalised medicine, genetic analysis identifies the molecular basis of disease, predicts susceptibility to inherited conditions, characterises individuals or populations at risk, and informs tailored diagnosis and treatment. Techniques include molecular sequencing and mutation analysis, as applied to inherited metabolic disorders such as phenylketonuria; cytogenetic investigation of chromosomal abnormalities underlying particular cancers; analysis of genetic mutations in coagulation factors and regulatory proteins responsible for inherited bleeding disorders; and bioinformatic and metabolomic approaches that link genetic and biochemical data in conditions such as diabetes. Genetic analysis also extends to agriculture and biology, where it supports precision breeding, the assessment of genetic diversity, and phylogenetic and principal-component analyses of populations and species. Recurring themes are the detection and interpretation of variants and the integration of genetic data with molecular and clinical information. By revealing the genetic determinants of traits and diseases, genetic analysis underpins diagnosis, risk prediction, and individualised intervention, and provides a framework for understanding inheritance, variation, and molecular function across human health and the broader life sciences.
