Overview

Neonatal intensive care is the specialized medical care provided to critically ill and premature newborns, typically delivered in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) by a multidisciplinary team. It supports infants who are born preterm or who have serious illnesses, congenital conditions, or complications around the time of birth, often requiring close monitoring of vital signs, respiratory support, controlled nutrition, infection control, and the careful use of medications. The goal is to stabilize fragile newborns, manage life-threatening conditions, and give them the best possible chance of survival and healthy development, while supporting families through a demanding period of care. Research published in this journal addresses many facets of neonatal and perinatal care. Contributions include antimicrobial stewardship in neonatal units, the recognition and management of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants, and the search for biomarkers, such as newborn microRNA expression, for disease diagnosis. Other work examines prenatal prognostication of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, the management of rare conditions such as tracheoesophageal fistula and meconium aspiration, and the nutritional care of newborns, including breast-milk handling, storage, and human milk banking. Studies also consider the wellbeing of maternal and neonatal healthcare staff and outcomes associated with maternal conditions. Recurring themes include prematurity, infection prevention, respiratory and surgical conditions, nutrition, diagnostics, and the organization and quality of intensive care.
