Overview

Gene expression is the process by which the information encoded in a gene is converted into a functional product, typically through transcription of DNA into RNA and translation of messenger RNA into protein. It is tightly regulated at multiple levels, including transcription-factor binding, epigenetic modification, and post-transcriptional control by molecules such as microRNAs, allowing cells to respond to internal and environmental signals and to maintain specialized function. Research in this area examines transcriptional regulation, including the activation of transcription factor EB and NF-κB-mediated control in keratinocytes, and the modulation of cytokine gene expression by viral proteins. Studies of gene-expression analysis identify mechanisms of resistance to apoptosis in colorectal cancer and characterize the expression of adhesion molecules such as VCAM-1 in tumor tissue. MicroRNA-mediated regulation is explored through direct promoter targeting of genes such as OCT4 and the quantification of microRNAs for diagnostic screening. Other work addresses regulatory single-nucleotide polymorphisms and transcription-factor binding sites in disease and adaptation, the epigenetic regulation of neurotrophic factors in chronic pain, and the evolutionary conservation of developmental gene families. The role of specific genes in chronic kidney disease and thyroid cancer proliferation further illustrates the field's scope. By elucidating how genes are switched on and off and translated into function, the study of gene expression underpins understanding of development, disease mechanisms, and molecular diagnostics.
