Overview
Global health research and policy is the interdisciplinary field concerned with health problems that transcend national boundaries and with the evidence, systems, and governance needed to address them equitably. It studies the distribution and determinants of disease across populations, prioritising health equity and the social, economic, and political forces that shape outcomes worldwide. Substantive areas include the burden of non-communicable diseases and the quality of life of older persons living with them, the performance and financing of immunisation programmes, and how public spending, economic growth, and governance factors such as corruption influence health system results. The field also examines maternal, neonatal, and child health, the wellbeing and burnout of healthcare workers, gender and social dynamics that affect access and behaviour, and the use of tools such as health impact assessment to anticipate the consequences of policies and projects. Methodologically it spans quantitative analyses across countries, qualitative inquiry into lived experience, and evaluation of interventions and programmes. By linking research evidence to policy formulation, it aims to inform resource allocation, strengthen health systems, and guide responses to shared challenges, including emerging infectious threats. Its overarching goal is to translate cross-national understanding of health determinants into effective, equitable action across diverse settings.
