Overview
Biosystems refers to the integrated study of biological systems as networks of interacting molecular, cellular, and physiological components, encompassing systems biology and the analysis of how genes, proteins, metabolites, and regulatory circuits collectively produce phenotype and function. Rather than examining single molecules in isolation, the field characterizes the behavior of complex biological assemblies through high-throughput and quantitative methods, integrating genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to map pathways and emergent properties. Central concerns include gene regulation, signal transduction, the relationship between genotype and disease, and the way perturbations such as drugs, stress, or mutation propagate through interconnected systems. Methodologically the area relies on ion-current and mass-spectrometry-based proteomics, microRNA profiling, single-nucleotide polymorphism analysis, microfluidic assays, and reproducible bioinformatic pipelines. Work grounded in this domain includes comparative proteomic analysis of alveolar macrophages expressing human surfactant protein variants, quantitative proteomic responses to targeted cancer therapy, microRNA profiles distinguishing thyroid carcinoma subtypes, SNP-guided personalization of immunosuppressive therapy, and microfluidic nucleic-acid platforms for colon cancer screening. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research applying molecular and systems-level approaches to biochemistry, with emphasis on omics technologies, biomarker discovery, and the mechanistic dissection of regulatory and metabolic networks across health and disease.
