Overview

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a cardiovascular condition in which the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked, most often by atherosclerosis, the build-up of fatty plaque in the arterial walls. Reduced blood flow can cause angina, and acute obstruction can lead to acute coronary syndromes, including myocardial infarction; it is a leading cause of illness and death worldwide. Research published by the journal addresses the anatomy, diagnosis, treatment, and risk factors of coronary and broader cardiovascular disease. Anatomical and imaging work includes variation in the diameter of the left coronary artery and its branches and electrocardiographic and echocardiographic comparison of single- versus multivessel disease. Diagnostic studies examine localization of the angina-related artery from the admission electrocardiogram in unstable angina and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Interventional research covers percutaneous coronary intervention, including complex bifurcation lesions of the left main artery, and strategies to prevent radial-artery occlusion after transradial catheterization. Other studies explore related cardiovascular conditions and risk factors, such as heart failure and cardiorenal signaling, sleep-disordered breathing, pulmonary embolism risk stratification, the role of microRNA as a therapeutic strategy in ischemic heart disease, and the association of vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms with dyslipidemia in patients with coronary artery disease. Together these aspects reflect the diagnosis, management, and prevention of coronary and cardiovascular disease.
