Overview

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor that arises from smooth muscle cells, the involuntary muscle found in the walls of organs and blood vessels throughout the body. It is a type of soft tissue sarcoma and can develop in many sites, including the uterus, gastrointestinal tract, retroperitoneum, blood vessels, and, less commonly, organs such as the thyroid gland. Leiomyosarcomas tend to be aggressive, can grow and spread to other parts of the body, and often present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, making accurate pathological identification, biomarker characterization, and individualized treatment important. Research in hematology and oncology investigates the molecular features, diagnosis, and management of these tumors. Within this journal's scope, relevant work includes the identification of a novel biomarker for human uterine leiomyosarcoma, a study of somatic mutations in interferon-gamma signaling molecules in human uterine leiomyosarcoma, a review and case experience of leiomyosarcoma of the thyroid gland, and a case report of primary thyroid leiomyosarcoma with a review of recent literature. Together these illustrate the biology, molecular characterization, and clinical presentation of this uncommon malignancy across different anatomical sites. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the topic.
