Overview
Biomarkers are objectively measurable biological characteristics that indicate normal physiological processes, pathological states, or responses to therapeutic intervention. They may be molecular, cellular, or imaging-based, and include proteins, genes, microRNAs, metabolites, epigenetic modifications, and other analytes detectable in blood, tissue, or body fluids. In hematology and oncology, biomarkers underpin early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, prediction of treatment response, and disease monitoring, enabling stratification of patients and the rational application of targeted therapy. They are conventionally classified by function, encompassing diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, and pharmacodynamic markers, and their clinical utility depends on analytical validity, reproducibility, and clinical relevance. Molecular and epigenetic biomarkers, including microRNA expression signatures and DNA methylation patterns, have been investigated for the detection and characterization of malignancies such as head and neck cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, while circulating and cellular markers extend to immunomonitoring of cancer and infectious disease. Discovery and validation increasingly integrate genomic, proteomic, and immunological platforms, and biomarkers also bridge into nutrition, inflammation, and developmental and reproductive contexts. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on biomarker discovery, validation, and application, including molecular, microRNA, epigenetic, and immunological markers for the diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of cancer and related conditions across clinical and laboratory settings.
