Overview
Vaccine development is the systematic process of designing, producing, and evaluating biological preparations that train the immune system to recognize and defend against specific pathogens. It progresses from antigen discovery and platform selection through preclinical testing to phased clinical trials assessing safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy, followed by regulatory review, manufacturing, and post-licensure surveillance. Vaccine platforms include inactivated and live-attenuated organisms, protein subunit and epitope-based formulations, and nucleic-acid and vector approaches, often combined with adjuvants and delivery systems such as nanoparticle carriers to enhance and direct the immune response. Effective development must elicit durable protective immunity, frequently by inducing neutralizing antibodies and cellular responses, while ensuring tolerability across diverse populations. Beyond the laboratory, successful immunization programs depend on uptake, which is shaped by vaccine hesitancy, access, and the attitudes of healthcare workers and the public.
