Overview
Cancer biology is the scientific study of the cellular and molecular processes underlying the development, progression, and spread of cancer. It investigates how normal cells acquire mutations and altered signaling that allow them to grow uncontrollably, evade death, invade surrounding tissue, and metastasize, and it examines the roles of oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, the tumor microenvironment, and the experimental systems used to model malignancy. As one of the central areas of biomedical research, cancer biology provides the foundation for identifying diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and for developing targeted therapies. Research published in Cancer Genetics And Biomarkers addresses these themes, including a review of tumor development in p53 knockout mice that illuminates the role of this key tumor suppressor, an analysis of the evolving properties of solid human tumor cells across various in vitro experimental systems, and a discussion of the molecular and cell biological considerations governing the initiation and development of sporadic, non-hereditary solid cancers. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cancer biology, the mechanisms of tumorigenesis, and the genetic and cellular basis of malignant disease.
