Overview

Type 2 diabetes risk refers to the probability that an individual will develop type 2 diabetes mellitus, a metabolic disorder characterised by insulin resistance and progressive beta-cell dysfunction leading to chronic hyperglycaemia. Risk is shaped by modifiable factors such as adiposity, physical inactivity, and diet, and by non-modifiable factors including age, family history, and genetic variation, with prediabetes representing an intermediate, high-risk state amenable to intervention. Quantifying and stratifying this risk draws on clinical assessment, metabolic and biochemical markers, genetic polymorphism analysis, and lifestyle data. Research relevant to this area examines bioinformatics of metabolomics in type 2 diabetes mellitus, baseline assessment of primary-care prediabetes patients engaging in a technology-enhanced lifestyle intervention, and biopsychosocial models of self-management and quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes. Allied work addresses risk factors in gestational diabetes, computational analysis of disease-associated SNPs and transcription-factor binding sites, the diabetes-depression link via kynurenine and vitamin B6 pathways, and non-invasive glucose measurement. These studies integrate bioinformatics, metabolomics, genetics, and clinical epidemiology to clarify the determinants and prediction of diabetes risk. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the biology, genetics, and bioinformatics of diabetes and its risk factors.
