Overview
Alkaloids are a structurally diverse group of nitrogen-containing secondary metabolites produced by plants, and some other organisms, that exert pronounced physiological and pharmacological effects. They include classes such as the indole, tropane, and isoquinoline alkaloids, and underpin many traditional and modern medicines through analgesic, antimicrobial, anticancer, and neuroactive activities, while their biosynthesis can be enhanced in plant cell and tissue culture. Their study links phytochemistry, plant biology, pharmacology, and biotechnology, often alongside other bioactive constituents such as phenolics and flavonoids. The research collected here reflects this scope through studies of enhanced alkaloid production from Catharanthus roseus cell culture under varied nutrient, sucrose, and growth-regulator conditions, phytochemical analysis and thin-layer chromatography of crude plant extracts, isotopic characterisation of L-tryptophan, the analgesic and antipyretic activity of medicinal root bark, and the antibacterial and cytotoxic compounds of medicinal plants. Further work addresses phytochemicals in cancer prevention, antifungal plant constituents, and neuroactive tryptamine pharmacology. Together they span alkaloid biosynthesis, extraction and characterisation, and biological activity. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research in plant biology, including the production, chemistry, and bioactivity of alkaloids and other plant secondary metabolites.
