Overview
Cancer cells are cells that have escaped the normal controls on proliferation, differentiation, and death, acquiring the capacity for sustained growth, invasion of surrounding tissue, and metastasis to distant sites. Their malignant phenotype arises from accumulated genetic and epigenetic alterations affecting oncogenes, tumour-suppressor genes, and pathways governing the cell cycle, apoptosis, and DNA repair. Characteristic hallmarks include self-sufficiency in growth signalling, evasion of apoptosis and immune surveillance, replicative immortality, reprogrammed metabolism, and induction of angiogenesis. Understanding how these cells operate at the molecular level underpins efforts in diagnosis, targeted therapy, and prevention. Research represented in this area spans the suppression of metastasis through restored E-cadherin expression, transcription-factor requirements for thyroid cancer cell proliferation, selective cytotoxicity of natural and synthetic compounds in breast cancer cells, resistance to butyrate-induced apoptosis in colorectal cells, the biology of minimal residual disease in the perioperative period, and the in vitro evolution of solid-tumour cell properties. Allied work examines anticancer properties of phytochemicals, cancer immunotherapy, and the contribution of nervous-system signalling to tumour behaviour. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on cancer cell biology, the molecular mechanisms of transformation and metastasis, and experimental approaches to anticancer therapy.
